Sonic Frontiers may finally bring ‘Sonic the Games’ in line with ‘Sonic the Phenomenon’
While the art style and music leaned more towards modern Sonic “cool dude” bravado, the core gameplay felt somewhat similar to the original Genesis releases. If nothing else, it was a damn sight better than Sonic The Hedgehog 4 ever was. The first 3D Sonic game ever made , 3D Blast takes place from an isometric perspective using 3D models converted into sprites. Players travel through the levels, rescuing the Flickies, who are colourful birds that are being harassed by Eggman’s robots.
- Sonic CD’s bonus stages.Getting to experience these games in widescreen feels great.
- Tails and Sonic travel to an alternate universe to help Blaze the Cat to defeat robot pirates, and once again is a side-scrolling game where players stroll through the levels.
- The game goes so hard that even the level from Sonic the Hedgehog is fun to play — even if it is a stark reminder that Sonic ’06 exists.
- The 26-episode Sonic the Hedgehog features a bleak setting in which Eggman has conquered the world, while Sonic is a member of a resistance force that opposes him.
As I said before knowing the results, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is certainly the best. There were technical reasons to split the game in two, as explained by the developers. In regard to 3D, after Sonic Generations , I think that the best is The Lost World because it got the 3D worlds and gameplay right.

It demonstrates multi-faceted levels like caves and factories more than linear speedways filled with loops and corkscrews. With an emphasis on slower platforming instead of momentum-driven speed sections, the gameplay appears surprisingly varied. That certainly explains why Sonic Boom’s gameplay is so unlike that of past 3D Sonic games; it actually looks more like a PS2-era platformer, such as Naughty Jeux d’émulateur en ligne Dog’s Jak and Daxter. If Sonic Generations is a celebration of the franchise, Sonic Mania is a full-on holiday. It’s impossible to mention Sonic Mania without referencing its team of developers rooted in creating Sonic fan games, but it drives home just how incredible it is that Sonic Mania even exists.
Meanwhile, 3D entries tend to be more linear in design, feature various level objectives, different movesets, and allow players to upgrade and customize the playable character. Games since Sonic Unleashed have blended 2D and 3D gameplay, with the camera shifting between side-scrolling and third-person perspectives. Sonic’s home here is a cave that looks and feels like every child’s clubhouse dream, overrun with comic books and fitted with a beanbag chair. Gone, thankfully, are the days when video game cinema meant nonstop cuts and obscene angles.
In one subversion, you can choose to put down Omochao instead of throwing him around like many players would do, and he’ll thank you in one of the dialogues. While not as long in terms of actual length of gameplay, Cosmic Wall does take awhile thanks to the conveyor belts Eggman needs to get between sections. To put this in persective, it has the highest time limit of any Timed Mission in the game at eight minutes (even Cannon’s Core is only seven and otherwise no level goes above five). The game also appears to kill off one of its introduced characters at the end. Future titles would retcon this, as said character turned out to be too popular to die.
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis
It was still brilliant, of course; Sonic CD is one of the very greatest Sonic games and quite certainly the most misunderstood. It’s a game about exploration for the simple joy of finding cool stuff, one where you’ve got to travel back in time to find a generator placed by the evil Doctor Robotnik. This means finding a “Past” signpost, then locating a spot where you can accelerate uninterrupted until you burst back in time, emerging in a more peaceful zone where Robotnik’s plan has yet to be realised. Desroy the generator and you guarantee a “Good Future” and can leave the zone.
